The Secrets to Drawing: Composition
Lesson Description
Lesson Thirteen of The Secrets to Drawing Course focuses on one of the most important aspects of creating compelling artwork: composition. Composition is the arrangement of visual elements within a drawing and plays a crucial role in guiding the viewer’s eye, establishing balance, and creating visual interest. While technical skills like perspective, shading, and line quality are essential, a strong composition ensures that the final drawing is engaging, harmonious, and effective in communicating the artist’s intended message.
Introduction to the Principles of Composition
The lesson begins by introducing students to the fundamental principles of composition. Matt Fussell emphasizes that good composition is not just about placing objects on paper—it is about creating a visual story. Students learn that every element, from the placement of forms to the direction of lines and the distribution of light and dark values, contributes to the overall impact of a drawing.
Key principles covered in this section include:
- Balance: Achieving a sense of stability through the distribution of visual weight.
- Focal Point: Establishing a main area of interest that captures the viewer’s attention.
- Movement: Guiding the viewer’s eye through the composition using lines, shapes, and contrasts.
- Contrast: Using differences in value, texture, or detail to create emphasis.
- Unity and Harmony: Ensuring all elements work together cohesively.
Using the Rule of Thirds
One of the first compositional tools introduced is the rule of thirds. This guideline divides the paper into a three-by-three grid, helping artists position key elements along lines or at intersections to create a more balanced and dynamic composition. Matt demonstrates how placing focal points along these lines, rather than in the center, creates visual tension and interest.
Establishing a Focal Point
The lesson then emphasizes the importance of the focal point. A strong focal point draws the viewer’s attention and anchors the composition. Matt explains how artists can use value, contrast, line direction, and detail to make certain areas stand out while allowing other parts of the drawing to recede.
Students are guided to identify where the focal point will be in their drawing and how to arrange surrounding elements to support it. This process ensures that the viewer’s eye moves naturally through the artwork, creating a sense of visual narrative and intentionality.
Using Balance and Visual Weight
Next, the lesson explores balance and the concept of visual weight. Students learn that even objects of similar size or shape can feel heavier or lighter depending on their placement, color, or value. Matt demonstrates techniques for achieving symmetrical and asymmetrical balance, showing how both approaches can create effective and compelling compositions.
Exercises include sketching simple arrangements and adjusting elements to test how balance affects the overall impact. By experimenting with different layouts, students gain a better understanding of how to manipulate visual weight to guide the viewer’s eye.
Creating Depth and Movement
Composition is also closely tied to the sense of depth and movement within a drawing. Matt teaches students how to use overlapping, size variation, placement on the page, and directional lines to create a sense of spatial depth. Movement is introduced by guiding the eye along curved or diagonal lines, leading the viewer through the scene in a natural and engaging way.
The Importance of Strong Composition
By the end of Lesson Thirteen, students understand that composition is the framework that unites all aspects of a drawing. It combines observational skills, technical abilities, and artistic intuition to produce drawings that are visually balanced, engaging, and purposeful. This lesson equips students with strategies for arranging elements effectively, establishing focal points, and creating depth and movement, ensuring that their drawings capture attention and convey meaning. Mastery of composition empowers students to approach any subject with confidence and artistic intention.

Something is wrong. I can’t download this ebook. My computer tells me it is over 1.7 billion GB and it tries downloading forever. I’ve downloaded all others up til now with no problem.
I finally got it to download after rebooting, but it won’t open. Adobe says the file is damaged and cannot be repaired.
Hi Kevin,
It looks like everything is okay with the file. Are you still having an issue?
Yes, it does that every time I try to download.
I’ve tried some others and they are all doing that to me now. It must be a problem on my end, but I can’t figure out what.
Hi Kevin,
Maybe try a different browser
Also unable to download this e book
Hi Zakariya,
The download link is working normally. Perhaps try a different browser or reload the page.
Thanks just had to be a little patient for it to download
Hi Matt, Everything is fairly clear to me with the exception of the Golden Mean and The Golden Points. I don’t see how you get from one to the other and would have no idea as to how to establish the Golden Points in a drawing. Can you suggest any links to better understand this concept? Thanks much!
love it!
Great, informative video. Really enjoyed this one.
Learning about these thumbnail sketches has changed my whole view and helped my composition dramatically! I wish I would have done this before. Composition is definitely a topic I need work on and this video helped dramatically.
I got the enoki downloaded but can’t seem to get the video to download. I haven’t had any problems with any of the previous videos. This is the only one I’ve seen that says the original is stored in archives. Could that be it?
Hi Debbie,
You should download either the SD version or the HD version. The original files are sometimes much larger and some are stored securely.
Not sure what an enoki is!!!! I meant e book
This eBook will not download to my computer.
Hi Daniel,
The file was very large. I have replaced it with a smaller file. You can give it another go.
Also cannot download ebook for composition
I don’t get what is the use of composition
thank you for this video and ebook. If I am correct, the thumbnail sketches are what is also referred to as gesture sketches or gesture studies – with composition being part of it – in that the forms and shapes are placed within what the proposed picture would be?
I’m afraid I am unable to open this video; I have tried several different browsers.
Hi Manjula,
Our video hosting provider is currently reporting intermittent outages. I suspect this is the issue that you’re having. They are currently working on the issue and will have full service restored soon.
Thank you for loking into this – I can confirm the video is working today
This video took forever to start. Then it played for just over a minute and got stuck.
HI Lee,
Have you tried changing the streaming settings? To do so, scroll over the video and click on the small icon of a gear. Choose a lesser quality and the video should play easier for you.
