Name of Lesson: “Reverse Self Portraits”

This lesson focuses on the use of value.  The student will create a self portrait on black paper using white media.  This will force the student to think about value and encourage them to consider not just dark values but light values as well.

Class Level: Art 2/3

Overview and Purpose: Students will create high contrast self portraits on black paper with white drawing media.

Materials:18" by 24" black drawing paper, white drawing media-charcoal, chalk, pastels, colored pencils.

Objectives: The student will learn about the importance of value and how light values are equally important in the creation of a full range of value in artworks.

Delivery of info:  Students will be presented with a demonstration on using white media on black paper.  The students will review facial proportions and the element of art - value.  Students will be photographed by the teacher in a dark room with a strong spotlight light source.The students will use these photos as reference to create a high contrast reverse self portrait with white media on black paper.

Guided Practice: Students will work while the teacher walks around and monitors progress. Students will have 5 days to complete the assignment.
