I learned a lot information about blending oil paints. I can’t wait to get started. The five videos were great source of learning tools. Thank’s….
Thanks Iruva!
It would help to see the instructor lift the paint from the palette and use the medium. I was trying some painting over the holidays and was a little baffled by the whole medium thing until I looked at this video again.
This video keeps stopping approx. mid-way thru. I try restarting but it still keeps stopping, whats happening?? Help.
Hi Carlos,
This is likely due to a weak internet connection. You can turn off the high definition to help with streaming. To do so, click on the “HD” icon when you scroll over the video.
great series & presentation. I am enjoying applying some of these techniques to gouache painting.
Thanks for the video. I did not know that we can use a medium with oil colour tubes. I tried painting without medium (just using directly from the tubes). It seemed fine to me. Do you think we can complete one whole painting without using any medium?
Hi Matt,
I am not new to painting with oils. Ver interesting videos. Just some clarity, the Turps you mix in, would be pure turps and not those from a hardware store? As the latter would destroy a painting after many years. Your take on this.

I love your classes and I am taking the colored pencil series ( Awesome ) However, I am buying my dad for Christmas, oil painting supplies and classes. So, I need to know from you what I should buy him? What brand of Oil Paints and brushes. I am aware that you & I draw with the same colored Pencils, so be it, I will buy my Dad some of your classes ( Gift Certificates??? ) I will need to know what oil paints & brushes you suggest? He is not interested in any watercolor, only oil painting. Thank you for your help.
HI Matt, Love everything that you have here! I have a question on making your own pallet. You suggest putting white paper underneath the glass, but I have heard some artist say use gray as your background with the value #5. What is the best or does it really matter?
Thanks!
Hi Carolyn,
Ashley uses a white sheet of paper under his palette in this video, but I recommend using a gray sheet of paper. This will help you evaluate the values of the colors.
Awesome, thanks for replying!

Hi Matt,
Could you please clarify the use of turpentine with oil paint? As far as I am aware mineral turpentine removes paint and that’s what I use to clean my brushes, as for gum or pure turpentine is what I use to thin my paint. Is that correct?
