I have learned so much from this oil painting lessons thank you for inviting me to the virtual instructor series.
Hi Matt, I am so grateful to have chanced upon your recent free videos on YouTube during these difficult times. Now I’m all in and was wondering about some questions to which I already know the answers to.
Q: do I need to work in oils before using other media such as pastels, graphite and coloured pencils? And is it affordable. How steep is the learning curve? I already forayed into pastels and cps. Graphite, too.
A: if I can afford it, yes do it. It can only help.
Q: is acrylics a comparable alternative? Which is messier? My landlord won’t be happy with any redecorating of floors and walls.
A: plastic tarps. If I can do it, by all means do it.
As you can see, I think too much and do too little. Thanks for the help, Matt!!
I’ve learned a lot from this oil painting series. Thank you for providing it.
The last few lessons were especially amazing! Thanks so much!!!
Thanks Betty!
The lessons have given me courage and enjoyment everyday. Love all the variety of lessons that you make available and now you have the new “members minute”. This is wonderful. Thanks for all you do for all your members.
Absolutely wonderful! This is exactly what I have been looking for. I know it will help me to learn and improve my art skills. It was so much more than I expected. I do plan on joining for a year, but I think I need to practice on some of these modules first and then join so I can keep up. Thanks so much Virtual Instructor! Gloria
Very informative. Wish I had this information earlier. Thank You, will be looking forward to continuing.
Thanks I have gone through all the videos and share my gratitude and fascinated how you teach. The rhythm of the colors and the harmony you bring is very spiritual in all the videos. I learned a lot and more than I had anticipated. Best wishes
Thank you for sharing your insight! I have benefited greatly
Thank you so much. Just did a workshop with a famous oil painter and you reiterated much of what he taught and much more. Been doing acrylic now made up my mind to start doing oils. Just had two great teachers. Thanks again will watch videos over and over.
Sorry, first time posting here and posted under another chatter’s thread.

Loved this course. So very helpful and timely for where I’m at with oils. I understand painting practice is exactly that – practice, but the technical instruction in this course has saved me so much trial and error
Hi Matt, sorry for being a Luddite. I posted the same post twice because the first post went under another poster’s thread. Then, the other one too. If you have a chance, could you give my post a look-over? Much appreciated, very embarrassed. Sorry to the posters’ whose threads upon which I intruded.
Working through the many lessons here at the Virtual Instructor has been like making new friends. The lessons have much to say that is wise and they can be revisited. Having made a first run through Ashley’s oil course, I have learned enough to make a fresh start on yet another path. Thank you to both Matt and Ashley for all of these courses, getting sketchy, the live lessons and this friendly website.
Hi Michael,
Thanks so much for your comments! You guys feel like our friends too!
