watercolor beginner question please

Ok, this is from a totally NEW beginner in the medium of watercolor, so forgive me for being "unlearned", but why do people doing watercolor, not paint up to the next color, but leave white spaces between them? i hope this makes sense. thanks

Hi Charline,

This could be the result of one of two precautions.  One - the edge of the area may not be completely dry.  If the artist pulls the color all the way to the edge of the next color, some bleeding may occur.  Two, watercolor is transparent, meaning that any overlapping will change the perceived color of the color underneath. This could produce a third color where these two overlap.
