Colored Pencils / Re: Brands
« on: February 18, 2014, 02:27:57 AM »
Hi Genie,

I have always been a Prismacolor fan.  Yep, the leads do break easy and it's so frustrating when they do.  I also have the Polychromos pencils.  A member turned me on to them.  I love them too!  The lead is definitely stronger and the mark is definitely different.  I find myself going to the Prismacolor pencils more often because of familiarly - but Polychromos pencils are great.  I have tutorials using both brands...

Hi Janet,

I attached an image that may help out a bit.  There are quite a bit of dark tones in the reference.  Many of those values can be accomplished with dark brown or umber instead of blacks - or even any blues.  This is clear when you compare the really dark areas around the mouth and the eyes with the darkest values in the fur.  The areas around the eyes and mouth should be mixed with brown and blue, the fur is a darker value but still dominated by brown.  Another thing to look at is the actual value - or darkness or lightness.  I attached a photo of "Smokey" with any color.  This can help you compare the value of the darkest areas of fur to the very dark areas around the eyes and mouth.  I hope this helps out.

Excellent job!  Fantastic composition with great balance between darks and lights.   The variety of the sizes of puzzle pieces is nice as well!

Beautiful work!  I love the way the orange is contrasting with the blue.  It really "pops"!

Soft Pastels / Re: How to store soft pastel drawings?
« on: January 26, 2014, 01:10:16 AM »
Hi Kelley,

In my opinion, the best thing to do is to mat them and store them with a cover sheet.  Fixative is great.  I use it on many of my own drawings - however, it can make the values in the drawing darker.  And if you get a spray can with a faulty nozzle, you could get splatters.  Just be sure to test the spray ahead of time.  If you can't mat the work, a cover sheet will do the trick until you can mat the work.  If you have the space, a flat drawer is great for keeping the work clean and safe.

Wow!  Love them.  Great use of positive and negative space.  There are many colors on the top piece but the shape really unifies things.  The bottom work is graphically strong.  I especially like the play between the blacks and whites in the lower portion of the work.

General Discussion / Re: Portfolios

Hi Janie,

Thanks for the question.  I've got pieces here and there on portfolios, but no definitive guide.  This would be a great addition.  In the meantime, here are some resources...
