Choosing materials and brands.
« on: July 04, 2017, 05:06:23 PM »
Hi, my question is 'what materials to buy'.
I'm new at this and just started.
I wat to buy some materials for a gouache painting.
I'm from Europe (hence my bad English), so I'd like to buy what’s availably here in stores instead of expensive shipping and handling.
My choice at the moment is Royal Talens or Winsor&Newton.
Talens is a bit less expensive here.

Question 1: Is one brand better the other?
Question 2: I don't know if I like the medium or am going to like painting/drawing.  It’s all a try out for me. Should I invest in the better paints and buy less colors (like only the primary/black/white) to minimalize the costs? Do I need the whole range of colors if you can mix them? 1 tube W&N is about 7 $ here. Talens is about 5 &.
Question 3: Or buy cheap materials? I want to do my input and work in the art justice, but I'm not an artist and don't want to spend a lot of money on materials that are not worth my art.

these questions are also for in the future, when I need to buy other materials.

Hope my English is understandable :)

Winsor & Newton are good.

Why not try out a starter set to see how you get on? Try here:

Thanks for the advice!
That is a nice store!
And even with the costs of shipping and handeling, it will still safe me a lot.

I'm going for the introduction set :)
